I recently attended the Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exhibition (OFC 2025) at San Francisco’s Moscone Center, a premier event for optical networking innovation. While supporting a client with analyst and press briefings, networking with executives and media, and observing booth displays, I saw firsthand how this conference showcased the future of optical communications. Optical communications are crucial for delivering the high-speed, high-capacity connectivity required by today’s digital economy, supporting critical applications like AI, 5G, and cloud services. By enabling the transmission of vast amounts of data over long distances with minimal loss, optical networks ensure the efficiency and scalability needed for modern infrastructure. With over 13,500 attendees from more than 83 countries, OFC 2025 was a global hub for industry engagement, making it a key opportunity for tech companies to exhibit their latest innovations and share ideas with like-minded people.

As an OFC veteran, I gained insights from presentations, conversations with executives and editors, and pre- and post-show news. One of the highlights of the week was Wednesday night’s Full Spectrum Rock 'n' Roll Party at the Chase Center, featuring Hairball. It was a fun opportunity to enjoy classic rock, dance, and reconnect with new and long-time colleagues. Of course, between set lists and celebrations, I also had plenty of engaging discussions about where the industry is headed and what the next trends might be. Below are some of the key takeaways from the event, along with practical tips for tech companies looking to maximize their next trade show.

AI: Transforming Optical Networking

AI was a major focus at this year’s event, highlighting its role in advancing optical networks and enabling unprecedented scalability. AI is transforming optical networks, particularly for data centers handling AI workloads. Demos and discussions about the significance of predictive maintenance, which prevents disruptions, and traffic optimization, which manages AI-driven data surges, were the conference’s hot topics. The overall sentiment was that AI isn’t just popular; it’s essential for the future of connectivity.

PR Tip: To stand out with AI innovations, leverage PR and highlight specific applications or use cases. Media and analysts demand substance, so avoid vague, general claims. Focus on data-backed business impacts, such as managing AI traffic in data centers. After the show, leverage thought leadership with blogs, contributed articles, or white papers exploring AI’s role in optical networking to establish your brand as a leader.

400G and 800G: Powering High-Speed Connectivity

The expo floor was abuzz with discussions on the 400G and 800G technologies critical to cloud computing, AI, and 5G networks. New 800G pluggable announcements generated significant interest, with mentions of 1600G technologies on the horizon. Live demonstrations showed these systems' readiness to meet growing bandwidth demands. OFC 2025 underscored that low-latency connectivity is a business enabler: a message that PR agencies can amplify for maximum impact.

PR Tip: Boost your tech’s visibility with social media posts. Before the event, craft targeted messaging, issue press releases emphasizing business benefits, and connect with media and analysts early to secure coverage. Post-event, share case studies or blogs about deployments to highlight practical benefits, reinforcing your leadership.

Chase Center Party: Networking with Impact

The “Full Spectrum Rock ‘n’ Roll Party” at the Chase Center was a highlight. With Hairball performing 70s and 80s hits, attendees networked in a lively atmosphere. The Golden State Warriors’ home court offered a unique break from the conference’s technical focus. It was a night of high energy and valuable connections.

PR Tip: Social events are networking gold for tech marketers. Capture the moment with fun pictures and promote them on social media with hashtags. You can also follow up with blogs or videos to keep your brand visible, a tactic B2B tech PR experts use to turn casual interactions into lasting business relationships.
